Contract Marriage: Emperor CEO's Secretary Wife

Chapter 120 - A Lead

Chapter 120 - A Lead

Lu Chen who was unaware that his wife received some other man’s gift was busy with some other stuff.

"We found a lead. My men already confirmed that Xiu Mei’s recent kidnapping is somehow related to the Ying family." Xiu Mo Ruo started.

Lu Chen frowned as he delved into it further.

"Somehow?"

"The person is within the Ying family, but he’s not a member of the Ying family."

"So they work for the Ying family."

"Yeah, but what’s weird is that this person has some significant position within the Ying family but that person shouldn’t have something to do with Xiu Mei."

"Won’t it be because of the order of the head of the Ying family?"

"I doubt it. They have ten years to try to move Xiu Mei but they didn’t try anything. What makes them decide to start doing these things now?"

"Then something must’ve changed within the Ying family."

"Hmm... that could be possible. Or they had a reason to wait for ten years before taking action."

"Then I’ll offer another set of eyes."

The second brother-in-law fell silent as he thought about it.

"Then I’ll need those eyes on the Fan family."

"The Fan family?"

"Oh, has Xiu Mei not shown you the file?"

"What file?"

"The case file from her kidnapping."

Hearing that, Lu Chen paused. His eyes drifted to the door of his office as if he could see through the wall and the people behind it.

His wife read her kidnapping case file from ten years ago? Without telling him about it?

...And it seems that she looks fine?

"...Not yet."

"Then I’ll hold up on that offer for now. Oh, and by the way. I received a word from my twin brother just this morning. He said that ’To tread carefully and stop attracting attention’. This must be a message to whatever your organization is doing ’there’."

Lu Chen chuckled, quickly understanding the message. "Oh, then please send my thanks to my eldest brother-in-law and say that I’ll keep that in mind."

"Mhm. Well, that’s that."

Then their call was immediately cut off. Lu Chen placed his phone back on the table and leaned forward, resting his chin on his hands. He stared at his desktop for some time, thinking deeply.

Xiu Mei... read her case file after ten years.

His mind wandered back to the night a few days back when she fell silent for a long time during their call. He realized that it must have been that time when she read her case file. Her mood did felt weird afterward but she didn’t breakdown and lost herself from PTSD even after reading that.

He looked at the door again and wondered. Does that mean she’s finally taking the first step of acceptance now?

After thinking that, Lu Chen sighed. Well, aside from that. He should still worry about the fact that Xiu Mei didn’t even tell her that she already started reading her case file. He suddenly grew concerned about whether Xiu Mei didn’t plan on telling him in the first place or if is she was planning to tell it to him one day.

Obviously, she knows that he’s well aware of what happened to her back then, but despite that, she actually never heard the story from her mouth. He thought that it must be because she wasn’t ready to share it with others or she doesn’t want to be reminded by it again but looking at it now, he wondered whether Xiu Mei will eventually share her story to him one day.

He can’t even probe to her about it even if he’s the husband. Their relationship just started to advance fairly recently and it’s still very vulnerable. He didn’t want to do anything that would break that good streak at all.

Lu Chen heaved a deep sigh as he finally shrugged it off. Forget about it, Xiu Mei will probably tell him someday....somehow.

He picked up his phone once again and called the Legion head to send his new instructions based on Xiu Min’s message. Since the enemy is not creating movements, then they’ll be the ones to make a move ah.

On the other side of the wall.

Xiu Mei received a folder containing some updates in regards with Lu Chen’s requested interview.

"Is this for finalization?" She asked without opening the folder.

"Yes, we’ve chosen the 3 best options to interview with. We have two for magazine interviews and one for a video interview." The PR team executive elaborated as he answered her question.

Xiu Mei finally opened the said folder and examined the papers. She only read the companies requesting the interviews before giving her feedback.

"The ’In! Magazine’, aren’t they an entertainment magazine? They’re asking for an interview? From us?"

She thought that it’s either the news team or the business magazines who will ask for the interview. But to be featured in an entertainment magazine, that’s a magazine for famous actors, actresses, and idols ah.

"Yes, since both of you are famous figures in the industry with prominent backgrounds, they wanted to feature you for a magazine mainly targeted for young a.d.u.l.ts and teenagers for inspiration, is what they said when they requested for the interview."

"...."

Fine. It is what it is. They’re still an option so it’s not like the feature’s gonna push through.

"Thanks. You may go back." Xiu Mei said. The PR executive nodded before leaving.

She looked at the file again when her assistant stood up from her seat to peek at the file she was reading.

"Oohhhhhh, are you doing an interview with the president?" Her assistant asked, excitement clear in her tone. She was looking at her as if she was waiting for some juicy gossip or something that she would normally do whenever she finds something interesting.

"Well, yeah. The president is the one who specifically requested it." Xiu Mei honestly replied.

She heard her assistant squeal in delight from the news, almost jumping up and down while standing behind her.

"Ms.Xiu, come on, tell me, since when did you start dating? You denied it the last time right? Then does that mean you just started dating fairly recently?"

Xiu Mei was taken aback by the sudden barrage of questions being thrown at her by her assistant as if she was a reporter looking for a scoop. Instead of quelling her curiosity, placed the folder in between the two of them, and tapped her forehead with it.

"Just get back to work, okay. You’ll know the answer when the time is right." She uttered, standing up from her seat then she strode towards the door. Knocking first, she announced her presence and entered Lu Chen’s office.

She saw him looking at some papers while sitting on the couch and papers spread out on the coffee table. He looked so serious while looking at the papers or something.

She tilted her head wondering. Are there some problems with the report that she missed?

"What are you looking at so seriously? Are we having some problems with the report?" She probed, standing behind him to take a peek at the papers he was looking at.

As soon as her eyes landed on the paper, she paused. She fell silent for a few seconds before giving Lu Chen a weird look.

"Why are you looking at some rings?"

"Of course, it’s for our wedding rings."

"..."

Xiu Mei finally fell into a realization that Lu Chen was right. They... didn’t have any rings ah. Heck, she didn’t even receive an engagement ring when Lu Chen proposed to her back in the hospital. And then even after registering their marriage, both of them even forgot to get some wedding ring.

Then her train of thoughts stopped after remembering something.

Wait, that’s not what she should be worried about right now. What she should be worried about is the large diamond ring that Lu Chen was currently looking at at this very moment. The stone looked so huge that it was very eye-catching if worn.

She rested her arms on the sofa he was sitting at as she stood behind him.

"Can’t we just get something plain and simple?"

"Why? Don’t girls like big and sparkly jewels?" Lu Chen responded very seriously.

"...Not all girls. Besides, are you seriously planning to spend that much money on just a single ring? Don’t you like spending so much money on expensive and useless stuff like this?"

Lu Chen suddenly turned his face to meet her gaze. He looked serious when he replied to her words.

"First of all, spending money like this for my wife isn’t a waste. Second, I promised to pamper and spoil you so isn’t this a given? I remember seeing you multiple times wearing earrings with stones this big ah."

"..."

Hey, it’s just two times ah! And it’s not like she wore it of her own volition. It was her mother who forced her to wear that heavy and big stone for parties while blackmailing her.
